Yeah, SOTS posted this on the main page of the website

We had ATLA, now we have ATLOK (Credit LongtheDragon with this nickname)

Sounds like a waterbender, so it could possibly be the Avatar after Aang?

Nah, Trailerman, there wasn't a topic on this prior to you making this. I had meant to make one, but it was late last night when I got home from work.

Anyway, the name Korra to me sounds female and Water Tribe-y. So of course, one could make the assumption this is the Avatar after Aang. That would be kind of a smart move because then you can keep some really really young characters from ATLA and introduce them in ATLOK as old people. Nice easter eggs for the diehard fan.

That's assuming Korra is a person though. It could be a place, a spirit, or an idea. Oh the possibilities!

Another question I have, which I kind of touched on in my news post on the main site, is whether this is the mini-series we have been hearing about or a completely new series. I know when MTV put on their job listings page "Untitled Avatar the Last Airbender project" that Nick came out and said that there was a naming error or something. I suppose it's one of those things we'll just have to wait and see on since I've honestly heard things ranging from there will both be a miniseries and series to just a miniseries to etc.

Re: Avatar: The Legend of Korra

I was looking into the roots of the word Korra, cuz I knew that the names in Avatar often have meanings (ex. Haru means spring in Japanese.)
This is what I came up with.

Kora: is pronounced KOR-ah. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "maiden". Can be traced back to classical mythology, though the modern form was coined by American writer James Fenimore Cooper in "The Last of the Mohicans". The K- spelling is a modern variation.

Cora: is pronounced KOR-ah. It is of English and Greek origin. Possibly a variant of Kore (Greek) "maiden". Classical mythology: name of the goddess of the underworld. A simple, pretty name with an old-fashioned air.

Korra is also a village in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

I don't know if this pertains to the show at all, but I thought people might find it interesting.

I hope this is a full fledged show just like ATLA instead of a minishot of 5 episodes. Korra does sound water tribish like everyone has said. I envision it happening in the 'rebuilt world' hundreds of years later, where the EK has adapted FN technologies, the SWT is already a big place, things like that. Something way ahead of what we saw in the last show. It would be devious to have the same villain as before, the FN, and the purpose of the Avatar is to keep balance in the world, so I wonder what kind of conflict will be adressed this time.

I think it will be financially not profitable. Besides, they seems to be investing a lot of time in this project, so I think that IT IS full blown series.

The name sound like a movie in my opinion, but I really hope it's a full series.
Like other people said, Korra is definitely water tribe , all water tribe names have a "k" in them. It'll probably take place like 100 years after ATLA. Personally, I think it'd be awesome if it went back in time so we can learn more about energybending and the origins of the avatar.

My thoughts exactly. I always wanted a spin-off about the era before Avatar, how spirit world was founded, how spirit created Avatar etc.
I hope the new series will reveal some of these secrets.

For some reason, when I hear "The Legend of Korra", my brain always wants to think that it takes place before Aang's time. I'm probably wrong like I usually can be (xD) but, ya never know. But it sounds like it's probably the avatar after Aang, and like everyone else says, it sounds water tribey, and it kind of does make sense if it would be based on the story of the waterbending avatar who would come after Aang.

I was listening to the Sozin's Comet audio commentary with Mike and Brian, and they said that they had a lot of ideas for stories before Aang, even in the time before the avatar.

Maybe it's about the first Avatar! That would be so, sick!

Exclusive: New Avatar Series by Mike and Bryan Confirmed
Jun 10, 2010 at 08:00 PM

Jake here, with some news that I would say will be pretty big in the Avatar universe.

I can exclusively confirm there is a new series in development at Nickelodeon that involves the Avatar world. My source says the series takes place 100 years in the future, but did not specify if it was an actual series, or perhaps a miniseries.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are, of course, creating and producing the new series. No word on how much of the original Avatar staff will return, but I know the crew will not be back in its entirety.

I think it'd be awesome if they did the first waterbending Avatar.... the Avatar cycle starts with Air, so if she/he IS a waterbender, they're not the first... but maybe they're trying to just live up to the newly established name and be known as the first waterbendeing Avatar?
It'll be most likely either that OR it'll be like Aang's daughter who must find the new Avatar after Aang died... or just about the Avatar after Aang... idk. They need to make a video or talk to people about this @,@

Re: Avatar: The Legend of Korra

I actually heard that they do intend to keep the same characters in the story with the addition of a few new ones. I have two theories which could both be true and contradicted.
Theory 1: When Aang was attacked at the end of book 2, that he died for a split second and when he died another avatar was born at that exact moment and Korra is the avatar that was born and in that case she would be from the Water tribe since they were next in line for an avatar. The contradiction here is that it was stated that if Aang were to die while in Avatar state which he was in when he was attacked then there would no longer be an Avatar. However, since Aang only died for a split second his return to life may have made it possible for the Avatar to continue. Also he wasnt in full fledged Avatar state when he was hit by the lightning so that rule may have not been applied then.
Theory 2: Korra could be another airbender that was not killed when the Fire nation wiped out all of the Air tribes. Maybe she was raised by someone who soon after found her and raised her keeping her a secret. Then the discovery of another Airbender starts the new series of Aang looking for her and then finding her.
These are just a couple of theories but most likely neither one are true.

I think we'll only see the old characters in flashback. We could see Aang in the Spirit World. He could play a similar role as Roku to Korra if she's the new avatar. Some of the other characters could be really old like Bumi which would be interesting, albeit kind of weird to see at first.

OOOHH, I think those two plot theories are both much better than others I've heard of, but I just want the new series to at least tie up the loose ends of Zuko's family (such as what became of his mother, what happened to Iroh in the Spirit World, and what awaits Ozai and Azula). That little bit about Zuko's mom that they dropped at the end of the finale was a cruel trick seeing how they haven't made any efforts to elaborate on that, and has now been consuming me now for quite some time, grrr. Delving more into the secrets and history of the Avatar and the Spirit World would also be excellent. I'm most definitely looking forward to the next chapter in the Avatar universe, whatever it's about! :)

I think we're all agreed that it's prob a chick waterbender, but I would love it if it were actually a descendant of Sokka and Suki. I think that would be amazing!

Here's my take. I think that ATLOK could be used as a link to a completely new, full-fledged series. Think about it, it kind of makes sense. Making the blind jump from ATLA to completely new characters and a completely different plot could have been displeasing to many fans, as they would have wanted to see what happened to the original ATLA characters. I think ATLOK serves as an epilogue/bridge to a possible future series, but that's just me.
