Now, most of Aang's problems in his fight with Ozai (before he went all Avatar) came from his good nature and unwillingness to kill Ozai. Imagine how the fight would be if he was actually up against someone who could've dispatched Ozai as well. That's why Iroh, aside from being good humored/hearted, was my favorite character. He was a bad ass but with that comes a responsibility for doing what's right.
