Extreme Makeover: AP Edition (Final Update: 01-10-2012)

Postby Snake of the South » Sun Jan 08, 2012 7:02 am

Final update: 01-10-2012: We will be having TWO contests, one for the site design, one for the forum design. Feel free to enter one or the other, or both!

Image

Welcome to Extreme Makeover: The Avatar Portal Edition. This is a contest to see who can come up with the best new design for AP's main site and forum. The site design winner will not only get their design featured as the new design for the site, but will also get their choice of the Korra DVDs and an ATLA boxset (or something else if you have them all) for designing a main site skin(s). The forum design winner (who can also be the site design winner) will get an Avatar memorabilia from us the owners (ex: Momo plushie). Although the best design will ultimately be chosen by Uncle Iroh, Tev, and myself, a poll will open up close to the end where users can vote for their favorite entry which we'll take into consideration. The rules are quite simple:

Site design rules:

-Include all the links we have on our page on the left and right, including the ads (at the very minimum links to them, doesn't need to be images)

-Include the footer of the page

-Images must be .png format.

-Page/site must be .php format

-Colors for the page to be done in CSS/HTML/any transferable format.

-Korra related.

-Does not need to include the WB page (we'll take care of that).

-Winner will receive their choice of an Avatar season DVD or the Korra 1st season DVD when it comes out.

Forum Design Rules:

-We use phpbb forum. We will provide you with the our basic template file to modify, and hope to have a test forum for you all to use.

-Must include the chat at the bottom of the forum (We use chatango, we can take care of the colors for you)

-Winner will receive Avatar memorabilia, such as a Momo plushie Sots has in stock.

Contest deadline:

All potential contestants have until March 26th, 2012 to enter their design(s). You are more than free to post your designs in this thread for people to give feedback on before then.

Files for your use:

This is the CSS code for the site you can play with unless you plan on starting a code from scratch:

Anyone who paid a lick of attention in the chat last night will know I'm all over this shiz.

Here's what I have so far. Comments are much appreciated, as this is still in the early stages:

I feel I am slightly biasing our results by adding my two cents, but screw it, this is AP, and we have tons of lurv for our people.

Overall, I really like the color scheme. Like, a lot. Especially it's incorporating the Gaang and the Krew. I am also a huge fan of the top bar menu. Keeps people from having to scroll to menu links.

The couple things I might comment on:

The community link seems to have the triangle for the drop down merged into the word Community. Is that a feature of the menu width or the screenshot?

The left menu you put seems to be the exact copy of the code and makes the page rather funky. Would you want me to parse out the code for Korrakast and the RSS feed for you to use?

Also, could you put together an example news entry so we can see what you will have your color scheme be for it?

So far, I really like your design and have only minor fixes to even think of to improve on. Great work!

Coding for the RSS feed would be most excellent, yes.

The width of the menu is still a work in process, so I'll be tinkering with that for a while. As for the example news post, I haven't gotten there yet. Once I've gotten that done, I'll definitely get an image up!

It's a php script that may not show up in Dreamweaver but will once the template would be up.

For the news thing, feel free to copy one we have and put it in the body of the page.

Here's the code of the RSS
Code: Select all
<?php readfile('http://output37.rssinclude.com/output?type=php&id=309682&hash=6aeb6f8c36336ee70c3557c0541d244a')?>

Simple enough. I should also have mentioned in the start that we use .php pages, not simply .hmtl, so the pages will need to be of that format for all the php scripts to work. It shouldn't be difficult to change.

Let's make things a little more interesting with another player.

Work in Progress so far:
Image

I noticed the site uses WordPress as it's content manager so this template will optimized and designed for WordPress. Are there are any specific CSS elements that need to be included for the plugins and widgets? I'm pretty familiar with WordPress since my site, http://firebender.breakthrough-designs.com, is built on it.

The little things like that we will take care of when the time comes. If you think you are finished with your design before the due date, we'll do the tiny stuff like this for you or any other contestant. The only CSS element you should worry about are the colors. Everything else not mentioned in the first post of this thread is up to you! :D

I like your design so far by the way!

Glad to see we will have a fun mix up of entries. Looks great so far Pon!

As far as widgets and plugins, we don't really use all too many of those. We have played around with a facebook like button, but that doesn't have much coloring to it. so no worries there.

The only other thing I can think of to all this is our forum. Edit: See Jon's post below!

A little clarification:
Designing a new forum skin is a second contest (see the first post).

Sorry for not clarifying this earlier (and being somewhat confusing), but sometimes you leave out things when you get too excited. :D Our current forums are phpBB, but if you can design anything that matches your main site design and is also very Avatar-y, that a big plus. Keep up the good work everyone!

Also, to help our entries for both contests:

For the site designs:
Since you may or may not have access to your own website/server to check out your work, feel free to send us your files (Jon, Tev, or I- via PM or email or whatnot) so we can upload them to the site and you can see your work live and in action! Test out the buttons, links, images, etc.

For the forum designs:
Again, you may not have access to your own website/server, so send us your phpbb template and we will upload it here and test it out until we make a test forum.

If I have time I might design a matching forum layout. In the meantime, I currently have the basis of the layout coded in Dreamweaver. So far my goal was to consolidate AP's current navigation into streamline jQuery drop down menus that is compatible for both CSS 2.0 & 3.0. Haha, I'm getting a little fancy here but basically this layout is going to interactive and stylish. :]

So far this is about 30-40 % done. I'm going to create a sidebar navigation for the advertisements and news feeds along with news areas in the content area. So far the layout is compatible with Firefox and Safari on Mac OSX Lion. I'll test it on Windows, Chrome, & IE later.

Does the layout need to include the direct http links or just the "name".php"?

Ha no worries. It is actually my favorite thing about both you and AA's design is that the menu is consolidated to the top. It opens up the whole screen for us to use for things like videos and screenshots (our screenshots page is on another program of sorts, so we could just inlay it with this kind of design) and the possibility of forum inclusion, as well.

And the side bar for new and ads would be perfect, as you both are doing. Really I just love the designs you guys have come up with and can't wait to see the finished products.

To your question, Pon: Whichever works easiest for you. They should direct to the pages on just the "name".php instead of the whole link, but I think I switched to full addresses for the left side bar because it was a .txt files being used with a php embed. So whatever you use that makes the page work, go for it.

Random Q:
What percent of the screen do your designs take up, Pon and AA? A certain percent? It would be preferable for us to use something on at least the order of 85%, perhaps 90 or more, so that we maximize screen real estate.

I think mine's set at 75%, or close to it. I can spread it out more if you like.

It would be great if you could. This way we may be able to include the screenshots and forum. So long as it doesn't alter your design too drastically.

Originally, the layout had a fixed width of 850 pixels, but I modified it to be a liquid layout with a width of 85%.

Well everyone it seems we are less than 3 weeks away from the deadline. So far we have two awesome designs for the site, but we are always accepting more!

For those who have submitted, if you would be kind enough to PM or email me your code so far (email: apadmin [at] theavatarportal.org), we will get up your design so far on our server so you can see it in action and design from there. It will also help us judges put together our necessary elements so we can see the final product.

just noticed that your forum template is linked to Megaupload, which as we all know, was taken down by a bunch of corrupt tyrannical assholes that we Americans let oppress us on a day-to-day basis [AKA the government]

while I personally am not entering the contest, in the event that someone else does and wants to use the template, you might want to provide another link. just food for thought.
