Dragons

A thread for researching and theories on the Dragons of the Avatar world.

For those that have not seen the recent episode, The Avatar and The Firelord, be warned of spoilers.

This recent episode confirmed that Roku was not the only one with a dragon and that at one point there may have been many dragons as they were able to line the Dragonbone catacombs with dragon skulls. Since we have not seen a dragon in the series except for Roku and Sozin's, it's hard to be 100% if they are extinct.

One would think the fire nation would want to use them in the war and since they haven't, I would venture to guess that they are endangered or extinct. I would not rule out the possibility of someone having a few dragons in their possession, hoping to hide them from the Fire Nation, so that they will not be made into war slaves.

So, what might have happened to make the dragons become extinct?

Could they breathe fire? We have not seen a dragon breathe fire, but I would like to assume that they are the ones who taught the first firebenders, especially since Iroh says breathing is key in firebending and...dragons usually breathe fire.

What colors might they have come in? Fang was red, but Sozin's like dark gray/black. So what range of colors might they have had?

Lots of questions and not many answers.

I would also like to point out noticable differences in Fang and Sozin's dragon's physical features. Sozin's dragon had bat like wings on the side of his face that are not present in Fang's features. as well as a white beard, common to some Asian mystical being. So there are probably different type, different species of dragons.

roku's dragon could breathe fire. I forgot what episode i saw it in though. I think i saw it.

sozin's dragon also look very much like the one zuko saw in his dream when he was a firelord.

Hmmm, I don't remember seeing him breathe fire, but if there is an episode that shows it, I would like to see it.

As for the dragon in Zuko's dream, I don't remember what is looked like, but if they did look alike, it would be great symbolism because Iroh was red like Fang and it would represent the inner conflict between Zuko's past with his great grandfathers and the one he is struggling with now.

I think blue is for sozin and azula because they are evil. the red was for iroh and roku becuase they were "good" lol. roku's dragon was red and roku was good so was iroh. sozins dargon was blue, he was evil and so was azula so they match.

They do look like Sozin's. If you look at the pictures on Nick.com from 306, you'll see they look just like him. I think the appearance might be significant. Maybe that species of dragons were used by the royal families, and that's why they were chosen in Zuko's dream.

Well perhaps the reason for their scarcity and eventual extinction might not be because they were recruited for war but maybe it is in themselves. Maybe they are just have an inferior process of reproduction which caused them to be extinct.

And maybe I am colorblind, which I think I am not, but I think Sozin's Dragon was blue, dark blue.

Well, I don't think that creators would use an excuse like reproductive problems on a kid's show. Chances are there is a reason why they have disappeared. Maybe when the war started, the dragons sense the imbalance in the world and left the Fire Nation for another place, maybe the spirit world so that they would not have to fight in the war.

Sozin's dragon was black/dark gray. There is a picture of him on nick.com for episode 306, and he's not blue.

Nice video. I love Animal Planet, lol. They always have fun stuff.

Yup I agree with Avatargate(the no.1 fan)!

He did look dark blue in the eppi. The one on nick might look different. But in the epi. it was surely a dark blue one. :)

I think the fire nation learned fire bending from the dragons like the earth kingdom learned earthbendin from the badgermoles :)

Hmm maybe, but it's kinda the same with the others.

the earth kingdom is at it's strongest in spring Learned from badgermoles

The air nomads are their best in Autum Learned from flying bison

The water tribe is the most powerful in winter learned from the unagi?

The fire nation is better in the summer learned from the dragons

And now we know that there were probably many dragons around (from the avatar and the firelord)

Oh and btw there is a difference between the two dragons fang and sozins dragon, just go to: http://www.nick.com/shows/avatar/index.jhtml

and go to the avatar and the firelord episode and look under creatures to find the difference

Yeah, I see the difference. Do you think every dragon is unique, or there are some different species?
Anyway, I think dragons have always been scarce. I think they've always been associated with the Fire Lords, the Dragon Bone Catacombs seem a clear clue to me. I think the Fire Lords identified themselves with dragons, and maybe traced their ancestry back to these animals, like the Chinese emperors did.

u guys make really good points.
i guess red dragons are good, in zuko's dream (4got the ep, but it was in season 2) iroh was the red dragon. dragon of the west i suppose. azula was the blue one, very powerful, but evil also. kind of like sozin. like iroh, roku is good, i guess.

and it makes sense that firebenders learned from dragons, lik u said "comes from the breath" like a dragon.
and that was probly their transportation to the air temples, instead of flying bisons.

o, and waterbenders learned waterbending from the moon. the push and pull of the tides. i think theyre the only ones who didnt learn it from an animal (bagermole,dragon,bison). the unagi is more like a water dragon/serpent, it shoots water instead of fire. its not really how waterbenders bend water.

I doubt that. Like I said before, Iroh mentioned that firebending comes from the breath, not the muscle. Dragons 'breathe' fire, so they would be the perfect firebending teachers.

@Boomeraang. The Water Tribe learned waterbending from the moon, not the Unagi.

BTW, I see a lot of people bringing up points that I already mentioned in the main post, so please don't repeat what's been said. I don't want to see this discussion go in circles, it's counter-productive.

I think the dragons went extinct. If they have them, why not use them in the war?
We haven't seen anyone with a dragon except for Roku and Sozin. (The blue dragon in Zuko's dream is different from Sozin's one btw)
It isn't mentioned or shown that Azulon, Ozai, Zuko or Azula has a dragon. Plus, on nick.com it's stated that Roku found Fang as an unhatched egg with it's parents gone. I think that back then, dragons were rare.
I think there were once lots of dragons, but they've gone extinct over the years, I'm guessing they were very valuable and men would do anything to get them, including hunting them down.

i don't think that the FN still have the dragons as their dreatest weakness in war is air force and those great animals could do big work for the army. and then we'd see it in season 3 as we are in charge of life of the royal family and we haven't seen dragons even there. if anyone in the nation has the dragon than the royal family members would be the first to posess it.

I think there are still dragons, and i think they did breath fire, and i think your theory of dragons teaching firebending is correct, AND i think that dragons only belong to royalty and they dont want to lose there precious pets, so instead they use metal machines for war. I also think there are diffrent kinds and all diffrent colors of dragons.
