Pai Sho: "My dad's better than your dad" Nya nYa

Yes... my dad is the AWESOME!!!

He built for me a PAI SHO BOARD. Full sized like we see Iroh playing on in several scenes. My dad even hinged the bottom so it folds in half and will add handles so I can take it places!

I am currently waiting for him to email me the photo he took of it. Then I will post the photo here to show you how awesome it is.

He is next going to cut me 2 sets of 40 tiles that are blank so I can design the pieces for it and come up with working rules. The game seems to use 2 sets of 28 tiles. I want extra tiles in case I mess up designing some. Also... in my RP, my characters use some tiles not seen so far in the episodes.

The board you will be seeing in the coming photo is his "scrap" version to see if it could be made. He will be working on a more solid wood version for me later next year. When that happens, I will auction off the first one.

The pieces are birch and black walnut. I have yet to hand-paint the images for each tile piece. My dad prepared the pieces and made a box to hold them. I have enough of each wood for two sets thus two players. The board folds in half on hinges with a carry handle. The baord is HEAVY by the way!

It measures 27 inches in diameter with each square measuring 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches. There are 4 shades of wood. The inner square is divided into 4 triangles. The triangles are of two woods Cedar and Pine. The same woods are used to make the outer design. The darker corners are stained Cedar and the darker sides are stained pine. It is all made from my dad's SCRAP veneer woods. The lines between the squares are a thin pine trim pained black that he hand-laid between every square.

He has yet to finis the rim and add the handle.

His "scrap test" is still amazing! When he is done, he will try to make one our of solid woods instead of the neveers.

He made a set of white painted presswood blank tiles too. They are 1-inch in diameter and 1/8 inch think. After some fiddling, we decided that the pieces really need to be at least 3/8 inch thick. So he is making 2 black sets of solid wood (Black Walnut and Red Mahogany). I will have 40 pieces of each wood. Then I have to design the tile images.

There is a thread in the University of Ba Sing Se board about Pai Sho where we are hashing out ideas and stuff on the play.

When I get the peices figured out and rules, I will write a rule book.

I hope to have a working board by next NYCC (2009) and if I can make it there, I will bring the game with me. *GRIN*

My rents both think I'm whack for watching 'a kids show'. Damn I go ape bananas when they play the whole 'kids show' like I full on skitz out... anyway your dad's cool as for making that. Tho just to stir the pot a bit my dad got me a .22 magnum lever action rifle. Yeah, sweet ey? Tis fully sick :P

I'm working on my own Pai Sho set, but it won't be as awesome as yours. Nor quite as big -- my board will only be 24 inches across.

It's awesome, Sc. Are you still figuring out how to play pai sho? Because, if you have/when you do, it would be a great idea to post a manual for fellow avatards incase they wanted to give it ago. Only if you time though. :)

The pai sho board is finally complete! It folds in half with a carry handle! AND, I have a beautiful hand-crafted box with two shades of tiles (a set for each of two players). The tiles are prepped for designing. HUZZAH! I promise pictures once I get home from my parents'place.

Next step is to study the game in the show and design the piseces AND the rule-book.

My dad is amazing. This was my Christmas present from him. I love him very much!
