Waterbenders living on the moon!?

Postby WaterBending_Monk » Fri Sep 26, 2008 5:11 am

Ok, I'm all for waterbending pride and wondering how far waterbending can go but what I read last night was going a little to far even for me.
I was looking up random avatar stuff and I came across this mediocre avatar forum and in one of their topics they beleive that waterbenders can live on the moon. (im gonna try to find the page I found last night so you guys can see yourself.) But yea they think because the moon was the first waterbender that if waterbenders 'somehow' managed to travel to the moon they would be able to live there. They said the gravity would automatically be normal for them and oxygen levels would be normal for them because the moon would give the waterbenders all the necessities to live there. Like the moon sends off some 'mystical energy' 24/7 so they can breathe and walk around normally just like on earth.
This sounds like one of those farfetched ideas that was just brought up because it 'sounds like a cool idea'. It is interesting to think about though. If the moon did give the waterbenders all the necessities to live, there would be an entire planet of waterbenders. Noone would win a bending battle on that planet haha. Although very farfetched It's interesting to think about =P. Thought I would see what you guys think.

Waterbenders living on the moon!?

??? I think you mean a moon full of waterbenders.

And there is no way that the Moon could support life even in Avatar.
From what I've seen in the series, I think its safe to conclude that, other than spiritual intervention, all the same scientific laws apply to the Avatarverse.

While the Moon is a powerful spirit in Avatarverse, the rock orbiting our planet is not the material incarnation of that spirit.
We know that the "Moon" is actually a Koi fish on Earth.

Don't really see a difference pleh, lol.

Well I still wouldn't say all the same laws apply. The animals of the avatar world aren't the same. and the people of avatar can bend the elements but we can't. But im pretty sure your including bending in spiritual intervention. In basic terms I think gravity and other planets of avatar have the same laws as us cause that would be logical. but still ya never know. There's countless things that exist in the avatar world that would never exist in our world.

Waterbenders living on the moon!?

Postby Pleh » Sat Sep 27, 2008 7:35 am

Do you remember the recent debate that went on about Pluto?
That was entirely a debate about whether it was proper to call Pluto a planet.
There is a significant difference between a moon and a planet, or else why would we have different words for them?
Moons are satellites and are usually significantly smaller than the planet they orbit.
Planets are larger and orbit stars.
(Generally speaking, that is. I understand that there are infinite counter-examples throughout the universe that we don't know about.)

My point was that, besides the obvious fictional aspects of Avatar, it retains our laws of science for the most part.
This means that reaching the moon would be impossible and surviving on it a miracle for the Avatarverse.
Not to mention that it doesn't make any sense.

Waterbenders living on the moon!?

Postby WaterBending_Monk » Sat Sep 27, 2008 5:39 pm

Of course it's not logical for waterbenders to live on the moon. But I think they would be able to get on the moon in the future. Look how their technology was advancing. Remember the fire nation war ships? Not just the balloons but the huge metal warships? If they can make countless of those warships im sure they can possibly work on a space ship. But the advancing of technology is entirely up to them.

Waterbenders living on the moon!?

Yuppers. and I tried telling the person who brought this topic up in the first place on the other forum that's its a bit too imaginative to become reality and they are determined waterbenders will be the first to land on the moon lol. I mean if anything, since the firebenders have the technology advantage, they will be the first on the moon.

Waterbenders living on the moon!?

Postby Pleh » Mon Sep 29, 2008 3:48 pm

They have no idea what space is or even that it exists.

The first time we sent people into space, we had them cleaned off to prevent the dangerous and toxic alien gases that we had thought was occupying space back then.
The Avatarverse has no concept of what a vacuum is. Why should they? Nothing in their experience has ever been like it.
How are they supposed to predict that they need an air-tight vessel, then?
They must know some basics about friction and surely the airbenders know about air resistance, but how could they predict the unbelievable heat generated by re-entry?
Last, but most certainly not least, the gravitational force of their planet is clearly not too different from our own.
How will they devise the rockets necessary to create enough force to get into space in the first place?

lol, pleh don't over think it. Firebenders definetly have the technology advantage like I said, so maybe in 100 or 200 years when they learn more about the world and gravity and technology, they will figure out how an invention like a rocket can go to space. I mean if anything, since the avatar world is in a new era of peace, im sure all the nations will work together to figure something out in the near future.

Hmm, unless they bring their own water? Then on various trips back and forth to the moon in the future they can bring supplies to build small bunkers and buildings so they can live there. buttttt we all know thats just as likely as people in our time accomplishing that lol.

Stupid doesn't have anything to do with it, really.
When we first sent people into outer space, we made sure that they were cleaned thoroughly before letting them back into the world because we thought that space was filled with unknown gases, many of which could be toxic or contain alien bacteria.
(If I'm getting my facts on here wrong and anyone knows better, by all means correct me.)
But I know we didn't expect a vacuum when we got up there.
We weren't stupid, just ignorant. The people of Avatarverse have a chance of predicting it, if they think it through, but I would not be surprised if they didn't have the concept of a vacuum.

Waterbenders living on the moon!?

Postby Renori Fa » Sat Oct 18, 2008 12:15 am

umm they probably didnt have vacuums but I dont know what that is relating to here.....

We were lacking knowledge when we first sent them in the moon, (by the way lacking knowledge is the def. of ignorant) but when we lack knowledge it means we were uneducated, or in a crude way, stupid....

But going back on track now... No ~Waterbending Monk, they cant live on the moon, I think Kiara at the top said it the best. If waterbenders live on the moon can firebenders live on the Sun?

Its a creative idea, I like it. I gave you karma for it. But I dont think it will work

Re: Waterbenders living on the moon!?

I would still like to wonder how they would breath up there too. Even when their technology is better, won't they still run into the problem of breathing? Unless they find out how to bring oxygen that will last them for years to come, even if they do get up there in 200 years (assuming of course that it takes them really long to figure it out), won't it still take them like an extra 100-300 years to figure out how to bring up that large amount of oxygen and supplies for living on the moon? It would seem like the all the nations would really have the pitch in alot!

On top of all this, what would really be the advantage of living on the moon for the waterbenders? (Other than always being powerful?) They wouldn't be able to fight anyone because everyone would feed off of the moon. Plus, I really doubt any other type of benders would go and live with them because I don't think they want a second war. It would be really easy for them to monopolize the moon like that.

About the point of the firebenders on the sun, how would they? No one can land on the sun. The sun is just a bunch of hot gases, and no land. And even if they could somehow land on the sun, that heat is too much even for firebenders.

I really think that this stretches the imagination way too much for me. Even if we are dealing with a fantasy world, I just can't picture this in the Avatar world. Unless the planet they live on runs on the same atmosphere as the moon, there is just too much disconnects.

this is a little more than farfetched.
Benders are still humans - they still need a sufficient amount of oxygen, and even if they could live there, nothing else can. What would they do for food, eat eachother?
I just don't see how this would work.
You look so tiny down there. Like a little, mean, peppershaker.
